Join us on a heritage trip to the magical city of Taxco, where Joel Poinsett – the first U.S. Minister to Mexico – saw the flower the Aztecs called Cuetlaxochitl and the Franciscans Noche Buena. Enchanted by the Mexican folk tale of the poinsettia’s origins, Tom Lea illustrated The Christmas Flower in 1951: the story of a humble Indian boy offering the Christ Child the best he could find and the miracle that occurred.
Just as a handful of weeds turned into vibrant blooms in the story, you will experience the transformation of raw material into delicious cuisine, enchanting objects, and silver designs. Tom Lea Institute board member Allen Gilmer shares his home and behind-the-scenes experiences led by Emmanuel Lopez, a Taxco native, chef, and guide.
