Time & Location

Nov 07, 2026, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

El Paso Museum of Art, 1 Arts Festival Plaza, El Paso, TX 79901, USA

About the event

📚Matthew Butler is a Professor of the History of Mexico at the University of Texas at Austin. Join him for a discussion on how Tom Lea, unlike any other American, gained acceptance in the world of Mexican bullfighting during its golden age in the 1940s.

🐂 Explore Lea’s thoughts on bullfighting, which he later fictionalized in his 1949 novel, The Brave Bulls. Discover his adventures on Mexican bull-breeding ranches as he sought the country’s ‘toros bravos.

📚Discuss how Tom Lea’s travels and philosophy regarding Mexico relate to his ideas about Texan cattle and the concept of Texanness.

📅This event will also be presented Thursday, March 4, from 3-5 p.m. at UT Austin Benson Conference Room, Sid Richardson Hall.
